Description of Mission
This is, essentially, a third world mission in our backyard:
We serve the medical needs of migrant fishermen make up of Filipinos, Vietnamese, and Indonesians at Honolulu Harbor at pier 38, next to Nico's restaurant. The tuna that we consume at restaurants, purchase at supermarkets are caught be these fishermen who labor under harsh conditions. They have made the arduous journey from their home countries to work on 2 to 3 year contracts in order to seek a better economic situation for their families back home.
These fishermen have no access to basic medical care, and thus a group of doctors, volunteer premedical students, and translators, bring basic equipment and medications to the dock to support their medical needs. We treat both acute occupational and minor health care needs as well as chronic conditions such as diabetes and hypertension.
There is need for more doctors, a dentist if available, and volunteers who speak Tagalog, Vietnamese, or Indonesian.
